The Case for In-Home and In-Hotel Fittings

Most fittings are still best done in the atelier. The light is known, the mirrors are honest, and the workbench is a few steps away if a pin has to become a stitch the same afternoon. There are, however, good reasons to reverse the journey. A bride who cannot travel easily, a client staying in a London hotel for two nights, an older customer who prefers not to manage stairs and tubes with a heavy coat — all of these are better served at home or in a suite than they are by a missed appointment. In-home and in-hotel fittings are a call-out of the same craft, not a lesser version of it.

When a visit makes sense

The useful cases are practical. You have several garments to fit and no convenient way to carry them. You need a last wedding-dress check the evening before the ceremony, and the gown should not go back in a cab. You are working long days in town and the only quiet hour is in your residence. We bring pins, tape, a hem marker and a portable glass. We still need a strip of clear floor, daylight or a strong lamp, and the shoes you will wear with the piece. A hotel room with a full-length mirror and space to walk is enough. A dark corridor is not.

What we cannot do on the carpet is the making itself. Seams are sewn in the workshop, where the machines, the presses and the spare cloth live. A call-out is for measuring, pinning and trying on. The garment then returns to Pimlico for the work, and we either bring it back or you collect it. That split is what keeps the finish at atelier standard. Anyone who offers to “just run it up” in a hotel bathroom is not doing the same job.

How to prepare

Book the window as you would a studio fitting, and say whether the location is a home, a hotel or another residence. Have the garments hanging, not crushed in a suitcase, and have the right shoes out. If more than one person needs to be fitted, tell us in advance so we bring the time the diary actually requires. Used this way, an in-home or in-hotel fitting is not an indulgence. It is how the work reaches people who would otherwise not get a proper fitting at all — which is the only case worth making for leaving Moreton Street.
