When You Need It Fast: How Expedited Alterations Work

Urgent work is not a different kind of tailoring. It is the same sequence compressed into fewer days, which means something else in the diary has to move. A hem on a pair of trousers can often be done quickly. A beaded wedding gown cannot, because beads still have to come off, the seam still has to be sewn, and the beads still have to go back on. Expedited alterations work when we are honest about which jobs can be shortened and which jobs can only be stacked into longer days. The finish should be the same. What changes is the calendar, and sometimes the price.

What can be done quickly — and what cannot

Simple hems, waist nips on a lined skirt, and sleeve shortenings without working cuffs are the usual candidates for a short turnaround. The cloth is stable, the original construction is intact, and there is no surface decoration in the way. Even then, the garment has to be fitted, marked, sewn and pressed. Skipping the fitting to save an afternoon is how a “quick hem” comes back too short. We would rather book you later the same week than guess a length from a measurement taken in the wrong shoes.

Complex pieces need more than extra hours at the machine. Leather cannot be unpicked twice. Bias silk needs to hang. A jacket with a full canvas does not like being rushed through a press. If you need a suit for an event in three days, we will tell you which alterations are safe in that window — typically the trousers and a modest jacket waist — and which we will refuse because the risk of a shiny press or a twisted sleeve is too high. Refusal is part of the service. A ruined jacket delivered on time is not a success.

How to brief an urgent job

Call or book as soon as you know the date. Bring the shoes, the shirt and any belt or jewellery that changes how the garment sits. Tell us the event, not only the deadline: a black-tie hem is not the same as a walking hem. If the piece is already at another workshop, say so — we will not compete with half-finished work we cannot see. At the Pimlico atelier, expedited slots exist because other jobs can be rearranged, not because there is a secret faster stitch. You should leave the first appointment with a written scope: what will be done, what will wait, and when you need to return for a try-on. That is how fast work stays clean.
